Assistive Listening System

We are presently researching the modern Bluetooth technology called AURACAST that allows modern hearing aids with appropriate software to connect to a variation of Bluetooth called Bluetooth LE. This allows for bluetooth transmissions to more than two devices at the same time, such as for churches, theatres and meeting rooms like ours. Several people with hearing aids equipped with LE would be able to select the WELU channel for their earpieces using their usual hearing app on their phone.

At the moment, March 2026, While the adoption of this standard in Canada has been very slow and not many hearing aid sources have embraced this change in specifications as yet, we can identify a number of Canadian sources of hearing aids that are said to offer Bluetooth LE for Auracast use. However, in the meantime we will consider returning to offering the headphone solution we once used.

Key Auracast hearing aid models available so far:

  • ReSound Nexia: Highlighted as a leading, fully Auracast-enabled hearing aid available in Canada.
  • Oticon Zeal™: Available through HearingLife, featuring Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast.
  • Signia Active Pro IX: Features Auracast readiness.
There are others, as in the list below, so check out your usual supplier and ask to try any of their offerings.

What Auracast Offers in Ottawa:
These hearing aids allow you to connect directly to public, Auracast-enabled audio streams in venues like airport terminals, lecture halls, and meeting rooms, without needing additional receivers. It also enables direct streaming from TVs and other devices in your home.

It is recommended to book a consultation at your hearing clinic to test the latest compatible models.

WELU is at the point that some of our equipment is becoming obsolete once more and we have to replace it. The projector was replaced last November, and now we need to look at the problem of the hard of hearing equipment, which is cumbersome to set up and keep charged and only serves 2 or three people at a time. Over the last year, I have been researching the new system called Auracast and the equipment necessary to provide this service to us as a small club. The exciting news is that, at last, the big names in hearing aids have adopted and designed this new technology into their latest hearing aid offerings, with more to come eventually.

In the meantime, I am attempting to recover some residual value in our obsolete and spare equipment that we no longer need. The following few items are being offered to WELU members in case one or more items may have some use for you, before advertising them more broadly.
